How to Make Introduction Perfect in IELTS

This post is going to talk about how to write a perfect Introduction in IELTS Writing Task 2.

Types of IELTS essay

There are not so many essay types in IELTS as many students believe. However there are many common questions. Don’t misunderstand the differences between questions and types. There is no such thing as an “opinion essay”, or an “advantages & disadvantages essay”. There is no such thing called “IELTS essay type”.

So don’t spend hours and hours learning model essay, or memorizing writing templates. Instead, The only thing we should focus on is the essay prompt and answering question.

  • Read the essay prompt carefully
  • Think about it deeply
  • Respond to it fully

Understanding the essay prompt

Let me show you some examples.

Many people believe that having fixed punishments for all crimes is a more efficient way to deal with crime. What is your opinion?

Crime is increasing in some countries. Having more police officers is the best way to reduce crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many criminals continue to commit crimes after being released from prison. What is the cause of this? What are some possible solutions?

In many societies, teenage crimes is increasing. The best way to deter teenagers from criminality is to give them adult punishments. Are adult punishments the best solution? What are alternative way to deal with this issue.

The structure of the prompts are similar, with 1-2 statements, and 1-2 questions. Ignoring any of the statements and the questions would bring your score down.

Planning

Planning is important in organizing your thoughts and scheduling your time.

Take 2-3 minutes to…

  • Fully understand the question prompt(Including statements and questions)
  • Come up with your ideas

You should incorporate these statements and questions into an essay.

Come up with your ideas

You should come up with two ideas in planning. Let me show you how to do this.

Many people believe that having fixed punishments for all crimes is a more efficient way to deal with crime. What is your opinion?

EFFICIENT is the key, and we shouldn’t ignore it. If we write something else, the score will come down. So we have two ideas of this.

  • Idea 1 : Yes, fixed punishiments would make court more efficient.
  • Idea 2 : But they would not make serving justice more effective.

You should make your ideas

  • Concise
  • Distinct

Concise means you should express your opinions in several words.

Distinct means you should make your ideas clearly different with each other. They shouln’t overlap or have similar ideas within them.

Perfect structure of an Introduction

Your introduction will have three parts,

    1. Background Statement
    1. Rewrite the prompt statements
    1. Thesis statement
